Stories have always had the powerful potential to ignite imaginations, stimulate discussion, and inspire hearts and minds. And because of its universal appeal, audio drama has the ability to span the boundaries of age, race, gender, and religious affiliation in a manner unlike any other form of communication. In 1996, a 90-minute radio drama based on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol was produced and aired as a broadcast special with great response from both stations and listeners. Since then, Focus on the Family Radio Theatre® has produced over two dozen “audio plays,” each one bringing to life remarkable characters and timeless values. Radio Theatre takes advantage of award-winning voice actors, orchestral musical scores, motion-picture quality sound design, and riveting scripts to unveil finished products that have earned such coveted awards as the George Foster Peabody, the Audie Award, and the Parent’s Choice Award – to name just a few. In addition, Radio Theatre has aired on more than 240 stations nationwide, garnering a weekly audience of 350,000 and achieving distribution among both secular and religious retailers. To date, a number of classic books have been adapted into audio dramas, including Les Misérables, C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia series, At The Back Of The North Wind by George MacDonald, The Secret Garden, Billy Budd, and Little Women. Among the historical events we’ve recreated are The Legend of Squanto and The Cost of Freedom, which is an account of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life. In addition, Radio Theatre has created original dramas: the exciting detective-turned-priest series Father Gilbert Mysteries and The Luke Reports, which retells the life of Jesus from a unique perspective.
Radio Theatre isn’t just storytelling. It’s not a “book-on-tape.” It’s a movie that plays on the biggest screen of all… your imagination.
