The Beloved Physician
"Luke, the beloved physician"—as Paul hails
him in the New Testament—was a
well-educated, scholarly man who wrote the
Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.
He was a complex man with a
rare mixture of strengths. Luke's credentials
as a physician and scholar were impeccable.
At that time, physicians were considered to be
artists; and indeed, Luke's writings are some
of the best remaining from ancient times.
Many have called his gospel "the most
beautiful book ever written."
Luke was one of the first journalists—an
engagingly intimate one with an ability to cut
away irrelevant detail from the heart of a story.
He also was an accurate historian; Luke's
writings have been proven time and time
again through archaeological discoveries.
Luke remains noted for the propriety in his
narrative. Showing the tact of the educated
man, he records the disciples' faults
gently, for now they are leaders in the Church.
Eclipsing even this strength of character is
Luke's loyalty and courage. Luke was the only
person who did not desert Paul—even to his
imprisonment in Rome.
